General News Washington will upgrade lone traffic signals
FRYBURG - Washington
Township’s only traffic signals are at the intersection of state routes 36 and
208 – Frills Corners – and while there are only two flashers with and eight
lights altogether, the township will save money by converting the incandescent
lamps to longer-lasting, energy-saving LED units.
The Northwest Regional Planning Commission is working to establish a bulk purchasing program to upgrade traffic signals with LED units – multiple light emitting diodes – and hope to be able to use grant money to offer the units to municipalities at low cost. The units would normally cost about $85 each, township secretary Jacqui Blose said, but Northwest Planning hopes to offer them for $19 each. LED’s would reduce the electric bill for the flashing signal lights by 80 to 90 percent, and will last much longer than incandescent lamps, Blose said. “I’m all in favor of LEDs, it’s worth it,” supervisor Bob Carbaugh said before supervisors voted unanimously to participate in the purchasing program. Road master Terry Bemis said ten of the township’s road signs have gone missing and he asked for approval to replace them. Bemis said he did not report the missing signs as thefts, as it is unlikely the signs would be recovered. Supervisors voted to authorize purchase of the replacements. Blose also told supervisors the township will be required
to submit information on potential stormwater problems to The Department of Environmental Protection is initiating
the program, and can restrict the issuing of environmental permits in
municipalities that do not comply; Blose said state disbursements of funds, such
as the liquid fuels fund, could also be affected.
