John R. Lauer

Lifelong resident of Fryburg-Lucinda area

CLARION – John R. Lauer, 81, of Sunset Drive, Lucinda, died suddenly Sunday morning, April 6, 2008 , in the Clarion Hospital .

Born May 1, 1926 , in Washington Township , Clarion County , he was a son of the late Edward M. and Christina M. Guth Lauer.

He was married August 12, 1947 , to the former Margaret M. Schwabenbauer and she survives.

During World War II, Mr. Lauer was honored for his service as a civilian crane operator with the United States Navy at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard.

A livelong resident of the Fryburg-Lucinda area, he retired from Owens Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion after 30 years service.

Mr. Lauer was a member of St. Joseph Church in Lucinda.

His lifelong passion was wood working and home construction, having built numerous homes in the Lucinda area.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Lauer is survived by four children and their spouses, Cathy and Michael Ochs of Anderson, S.C., Bernie and Deb Lauer of Lucinda, Sandy and Rusty Weaver of Shippenville and Pat and Anita Lauer of Lucinda; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by two brothers, Ralph Lauer and Charles Lauer, both of Tecumseh , Mich. , and one sister, Dorothy Pfendler of Brookville.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Lauer was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara Jean; a son, Michael Henry; six brothers, Edward “Pete,” Paul, Francis, Daniel, David and Thomas; and three sisters, Catherine Louise Zacherl, Clara Zacherl and Alice Niederriter.

The family received friends Monday, April 7, 2008 , in the Faller Funeral Home Inc. in Fryburg.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2008 , in St. Joseph Church , Lucinda, with the Rev. Bill Miller, pastor, presiding.

Interment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery , Fryburg.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Monsignor William F. Hall Memorial Fund at St. Joseph Church , Lucinda.

Merle L. Phillips

Avid hunter, fisherman and Christian role model

SCOTCH HILL – Merle L. Phillips, 87, formerly of Erie and Kane, went to be with his Jesus on Wednesday morning, April 2, 2008 , at the home of his daughter in Scotch Hill.

Born January 31, 1921 , in Lamont, he was the son of Merton B. and Viola G. Silvis Phillips.

He was married September 20, 1940 , in Sackett, to the former Margaret Ann “Peg” Bushley and she survives.

Mr. Phillips served in World War II in the 12th Armored Division/17th Armored Infantry Battalion B Company as a staff sergeant, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and other major campaigns.

After World War II, Mr. Phillips was the service manager for Times Square Motors in Erie ; then worked as a foreman at Parker White Metal Company in Fairview for 17 years.

After his retirement, he moved to their camp in Nansen, near Kane, where he lived for 30 years.

Mr. Phillips was an avid hunter, fisherman and Christian role model. He worked with the youth of various churches for forty years.

Mr. Phillips was a member of Lawrence Lodge #728 in Erie .

In addition to his wife, Mr. Phillips is survived by a daughter, Carole A. Biletnikoff and her husband, Bill, of Scotch Hill; a brother, Wayne Phillips, of Erie ; two grandsons, Douglas and Nathaniel Biletnikoff and two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Rianna Biletnikoff. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

A memorial service will be held at a later time and date to be announced, and will be held at the First Church of God in Kane.

The Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home Inc. in Kane has charge of arrangements.

Carl R. Schwing

Owner of Tall Oaks

WARREN – Carl R. Schwing, 72, of Howe Township , Forest County , HC1, Sheffield , owner of Tall Oaks, died Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008 , at Warren General Hospital in Warren .

Born December 23, 1935 , in Cincinnati , Ohio , he was the son of the late Louis Abraham and Ruth Engelke Schwing.

Mr. Schwing was part owner of Tall Oaks since its inception in 1981. His personable, engaging personality, full of life, color and an exceptional sense of humor has been responsible for making the Tall Oaks shops a remarkable success.

Mr. Schwing will be especially remembered for his spirituality and gallant struggle with a very debilitating illness for many years as he carried on a Christian Ministry that has touched the lives and hearts of multitudes.

His lofty, beautiful and reverent words will continue going forth in a book compiling these writings.

Mr. Schwing’s loss will be felt deeply by many but especially by his dear friend and caregiver of many years, Tom Beletic, with whom he resided and was a partner with at Tall Oaks.

Also surviving is a sister Lillian Wendling of Cincinnati , Ohio and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Schwing was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Schwing, Leo Wendling and Louis Schwing and one sister, Ruth Schwing.

Friends were received at the home of Carl R. Schwing earlier in the week.

Entombment was at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Warren .

We know that Mr. Schwing is now soaring with saints and angels in the heavenly realms and bowing low in worship before his Father, Lord and King.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Norman J. Wimer Funeral Home of Tionesta.

SOUTH BETHLEHEM – Elsie Ann Cobbett, 84, of South Bethlehem , formerly of St. Charles , Kellersburg and Widnoon, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday evening, April 3, 2008 , at her residence in South Bethlehem House.

CLARION – John L. Delp, 70, of New Bethlehem, died Wednesday morning, April 2, 2008 , in the Golden Living Center , Clarion.

Donald W. Dittman

CLARION – Donald W. Dittman, 84, of Snivelys Corners Road, Salem Township , Clarion County , died at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 , in the Golden Living Center , Clarion.

James M. Dodson II

VOWINCKEL – James M. Dodson II, 55, of Erie , formerly of Vowinckel, died suddenly Sunday, April 6, 2008 , in his home.

GROVE CITY – Thomas Denver Felix, 87, of Blom Road , Grove City , father of Larry Felix and his wife, Jan, of Parker, died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008 , at Grove City Medical Center .

SHIPPENVILLE – Jennie E. Haun, 84, of 13997 State Route 68, Sligo , died at 6:10 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008 , in the Golden Living Center , Shippenville.

Wilda E. Klinger

TITUSVILLE – Wilda E. Klinger, 94, formerly of Pleasantville, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008 , at Golden Living Center . Born May 31, 1913 , in Clarion County , she was the daughter of the late Jess and Matilda Stubble Best.

Dorothy Malmgren

HARBORCREEK TWP. -- Dorothy Lucille “Lucy” Bell Malmgren, 66, a resident of Harborcreek Township , died Friday evening, April 5, 2008 , in her home following an extended illness. Born April 30, 1941 , in Paint Township , Clarion County , she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Dorothy Boyer Bell.

SLIGO – Montague “Ben” Paulden of Colerain Street, Sligo , died Thursday, April 3, 2008 , in Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center , Sligo .

CLARION – Inez Maxine Confer Reedy, 69, of Maple Grove Road , Rimersburg, formerly of Clarion, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 , in the Clarion Hospital .

PITTSBURGH - Geraldine Laura “Gerry” Smith-Durso, 82, of Slippery Rock Borough, Butler County , died at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2008 , in Shadyside Hospital , Pittsburgh , following a three-month illness. Born August 7, 1925 , in Fisher, Clarion County , she was the daughter of Hudson Clair and Myrna Pearl Sommerville Rifenberrick.
