C-L and Clarion Area consider merging sports programs

CLARION – Both Clarion-Limestone and Clarion Area Districts have announced special meetings to pass a resolution authorizing school administrators to take the initial steps required to form a sports cooperative.

The announcement came through notices to be published in the Clarion News and in The Derrick.

The Clarion-Limestone board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, in the high school cafeteria.

The Clarion Area board meeting will convene at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in their large group instruction room at the high school.

According to the notices issued by the school districts, the purpose of each meeting will be to seek a board resolution permitting the districts to take the initial step required to secure PIAA approval for the purposed sports cooperative.

Final approval would not be possible until later this summer, stated the notice. However, due to time constraints relating to the PIAA approval process, the districts must empower administrators to file the necessary paperwork for consideration.

Should the districts ultimately approve the cooperative, Clarion Area School District would assume the role of lead school for all sports similar to the school’s current arrangement with Clarion-Limestone for wrestling and girl’s soccer.

Public discussion on this matter will be sought by both districts over the coming weeks. The districts will also be examining cooperating in other curricular and co-curricular activities.

The notices states the discussions are part of a larger effort between the districts to identify ways to share programs and resources while also exploring the pros and cons of school consolidation.

According to a notice issued by the schools, “although economic forces have played a key role in initiating talks between the districts, representatives for both districts believe that consolidation could permit the districts to provide academic programs that neither can offer on their own.”

The districts emphasized that consolidation would require years to accomplish and, to date, no formal steps have been taken to proceed.
