Keystone considers ‘thrown desk’ grievance
By Greg V. Renninger, Clarion News Writer

KNOX - “No one would want something entered into their personnel file that isn’t true,” Steve Wilson of the Pennsylvania State Education Association told the Keystone School Board members at their April 14 work session held at the Main Street , Knox SMILES Center .

Wilson was there to present a disciplinary grievance filed by history teacher John Quinn, questioning the facts behind a letter that will be entered into his file.

The letter, written by a parent from the school district suggests that students were placed in an unsafe situation when Quinn allegedly threw a desk, a CD player, and a three-hole punch.

Wilson countered Quinn bumped into an empty desk, causing it to fall over, and questions the legitimacy of anything else being thrown.

Wilson cited Quinn’s 30 plus years of experience with no problems, and the fact Assistant High School Principal Jonathon Maddy, regularly places SMILES students with behavior problems in Quinn’s room because of Quinn’s reputation as a strict disciplinarian.

Vicky Walters, principal of the high school was quoted shortly after the incident in question as to saying “sometimes they need the riot act read to them,” referring to high school students.

Wilson concluded by asking the board to again consider not placing the letter into Quinn’s personnel file, saying that Quinn “did very little wrong,” and “things in the letter are not true.”

The board is expected to act on the grievance at its April 21 regular business meeting.
