General News Sligo authority raises rates
Residential customers in the borough pay a flat rate of $37
per month for sewer service. The rate hike, ordered by the United States Department of
Agriculture, will be used to cover the costs of equipment updates and
replacements. Authority chair Bob Conner said that the USDA was requiring
the hike and noted that Franklin Borough recently increased its sewer rates by
$4.50 a month. Con Taylor of Sligo was the lone borough resident at the
meeting during the consideration of the rate hike. Authority member Jim Barger countered by asking why if he
were driving a car with four people, he should have to pay the same for a gallon
of gasoline as someone who only transports themselves. Borough maintenance supervisor Ed Myers noted that most all
new sewer systems are being built to be flat rate systems because of financing
for the new expensive plants. “We can’t have a fluctuating balance,” Myers
commented. Authority members noted that the sewer system cannot be
metered, and it was explained Myers had found some disconnected meters when
doing water meter readings in the borough in the past. The meters had been disconnected by the water customer to
be reattached before the next reading. Myers made the checks unexpectedly. The rate hike was approved, and borough customers should
expect the increase on their July bills.
