General News North Clarion hikes tax
FRILLS CORNERS - The Even with the hike, expenditures will total $8.8 million
– about $1.2 million higher than expected revenues of $7.4 million,
superintendent David Stake said. The school board in March approved a $678,000 project to
replace the roof on the high school building. Other tax rates in the district will remain steady:
occupational assessment, 18 percent; earned income tax, .5 percent; real estate
transfer tax, .5 percent; and two per capita taxes of $5 each. The board approved the new property tax rate unanimously
and with no discussion. The district faces reduced funding from the state – the
proposed state subsidy increase for this year is just 1.5 percent for North
Clarion, lower than the inflation rate. Last month, the board signed on to a letter to the state
legislature calling for relief from the subsidy cuts. Other business lJoe Vogelbacher
served on the school board for at least 20 years, but that era is over as the
board accepted his letter of resignation for retirement. The board scheduled a special meeting for lNorth Clarion
approved its end of a cooperative agreement with The program will cost participating students from North
Clarion or Forest Area $50 each. This is a change from last month, when the board approved a
driver education program run by North Clarion that would charge its students
$75, and would allow Forest Area students to participate for a $125 fee. lThe board
re-appointed some of its officers for 2008-09. Barb Beveridge remains board
secretary, Tina Karg remains assistant board secretary and board member Kim
Borland remains treasurer. lThe board held
two closed executive sessions for purposes of discussion personnel matters; at
least one apparently related to complaints from parents regarding a staff
member. The other apparently related the board’s vote to appoint
Christie McWilliams as varsity cheerleader advisor for the 2008-09 school year,
immediately following the two sessions. lThe board
approved the purchase of air conditioning equipment from Chris Cicciarelli at a
cost not to exceed $9,130.
