Helen L. Gerlach

Employee for state Sen. Mary Jo White

CLARION – Helen L. Gerlach, 79, of Heidrick Street , Clarion, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 , in Clarion Hospital following a short illness.

Born September 21, 1928 , in Ellwood City , she was the daughter of the late James and Eva Moyer Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Gerlach was married to Jack Allen Gerlach and he preceded her in death in 1960.

Mrs. Gerlach worked in the office of state Sen. Mary Jo White from 1998 to the present.

She was a member of the Clarion Rotary Club, and was a United Way board member and Community Action board member. She was a 12-year member and past president of the Ellwood City School Board.

Mrs. Gerlach was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion.

Mrs. Gerlach is survived by one son, Congressman Jim Gerlach and his wife, Karen of Chester Springs; two daughters, Hedy Gerlach Luke and her husband, Malen, of Midland , Mich. and Eve Gerlach Allen and her husband, Mark, of Douglassville; eight grandchildren, Brock Luke and his wife, Stephanie, Quinn Luke, Chelsea Allen, Griffin Allen, Evan Allen and Katie, Jim and Rob Gerlach; and one sister, Joan Andrus of Bayside, N.Y.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Gerlach was preceded in death by one sister, Janice Mckim.

Visitation was held Friday, May 16, 2008 , at the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street , Clarion.

Funeral services were held Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Harold O. Jacobson officiating.

Interment was held Saturday, May 17, 2008 , in the Locust Grove Cemetery , Ellwood City .

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marian M. Lander

Enjoyed spending time with her family

CLARION – Marian M. Lander, 79, of Venus, died Wednesday May 14, 2008 , at Clarion Hospital following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease and cancer.                 

Born December 17, 1928 , in Oil City , she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Opal Wurster Guth.

She was married September 27, 1952 , to Ralph Lander and he survives.

Mrs. Lander was a homemaker all her life. She was a member of St Michael Church in Fryburg and a member of the Rosary Society of the church.

Mrs. Lander enjoyed spending time with her family, her flower gardens and playing cards with her husband and family.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lander is survived by six children, Louise Carroll and her husband, Stephen, of Zephyrhills , Fla., Greg Lander and his wife, Sherrell, of Colleyville, Texas, Loretta Trevino and her husband, Larry, of Lima, Ohio, Lisa Carroll and her husband, George, of Lucinda, Ralph Lander of Vernon, Conn. and Lynne Fleisher and her husband, Rob, of Strattanville; 11 grandchildren, Christine Wayt and her husband, James, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Adam Carroll and his wife, Jennifer, of Land O Lakes, Fla., Leann Carroll of Zephyrhills, Fla., Hanna and Chance Lander of Colleyville, Texas, Andrew and Christopher Trevino of Lima, Ohio, Nicholas, Alicia, Jordan and Dayton Carroll of Lucinda and one

great-granddaughter, Hailey Ann Wayt of Zephyrhills , Fla.

 Mrs. Lander is also survived by six sisters, Rita McGraw of Erie, Doris Kramer and her husband, Lloyd, of Oil City, Dorothy Schupp and her husband, Robert, of Fryburg, Helen Obenrader and her husband, Jim, of Shippenville, Clara Sonoski and her husband, Joe, of Shippenville and Cathy Shingledecker and her husband, Rodger, of Shippenville; two brothers, Henry Guth and his wife, Donna, of Oil City and Alfred Guth Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Shippenville and a sister-in-law Mona Rita Guth of Fryburg.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lander was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Guth, a granddaughter, Marissa Trevino, and a brother-in-law Jack McGraw.

Friends were received Friday, May 16, 2008 , at the Faller Funeral Home Inc. in Fryburg. Parish prayer services were held Friday in the funeral home.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday. May 17, 2008 , in St. Michael Church, Fryburg with Rev. David Poulson, pastor as the presider. 

Burial followed the mass in the church cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of ones choice.

Frank Edward Saylor Sr.

Avid hunter, involved in numerous hunting organizations

CLARION – Frank Edward Saylor Sr., 67, of Front Street , Sligo , died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008 , at Clarion Hospital following a brief illness.

Born June 16, 1940 , in Churchville, Clarion County , he was a son of the late John M. Saylor and Clara G. Deitz Saylor.

He married the former Patricia A. Smith on March 28, 1969 , in Brookville, and she survives.

Mr. Saylor was a member and elder of the Licking-Cherry Run Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Sligo High School in 1959.

He served with the United States Army from 1963 until 1965 as a private first class, taking his basic training at Ft. Gordon , Ga. , and then serving stateside in Arizona .

Mr. Saylor was an avid hunter especially turkey and white-tailed deer. He was on record as having killed the Pennsylvania turkey with the second longest beard, more than 15 inches long.

He was a member of the Rimersburg Rod and Gun Club where he was former secretary. He was a founding member and current treasurer of the Foothill Spurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was a member of the North American Hunting Club and founder of the Tri County Gobblers. He participated in the Clarion County Youth Field Days mentoring to the young hunters. He was an instructor for the hunter/trapper education programs at Union High School and hunter safety classes at the Rimersburg Rod and Gun Club.

He retired from Harriger Auto Body near Sligo where he was employed from 1985 to 2004. He operated the Saylor Service Station between Rimersburg and Sligo until closing it in 1983 and continued his hydraulic jack repair business after retirement.

During the construction of Interstate 80 in the 1960s he was employed by Lycoming Construction Company as a heavy equipment operator moving dirt for the fill projects.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Saylor is survived by two sons, Rodney B. Saylor and his wife, Tina M., of Scottsville, Va., and Frank Edward “Ed” Saylor and his wife, Joni L., of Callensburg; two grandchildren, Dylan and Austin Saylor both of Scottsville; two brothers, John W. Saylor and his wife, Ermagene, of Sligo and Fred L. Saylor and his wife, Linda, of De Funiak Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Jane Aites and her husband, Junior, of Rimersburg and Pearl Seybert of Rimersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death along with his parents are triplet sisters, Genevieve, Elizabeth and Geraldine Saylor in October 1938; a nephew, Jason Allen Aites on July 30, 1999 and a brother-in-law, Ronald Keith Seybert on August 7, 2006 .

Friends were received Monday, May 19, 2008 , and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, Rimersburg.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2008 , at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Moore, moderator of the Licking-Cherry Run Presbyterian Church, and lay minister Terry Marlowe, officiating.

Members of the Rimersburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will perform military honors at the funeral home following the funeral service.

Interment will follow at the Cedarview Memorial Park , Strattanville.

Katherine W. Shoup

Enjoyed spending time with family and friends

SLIGO – Katherine W. Shoup, 87, of South Seventh Avenue, Clarion, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo.

Born June 7, 1920 , in Ridgeway, she was the daughter of the late John Franklin Walters and Mary Elisa Hinkle Walters.

Ms. Shoup graduated in 1939 from Clarion High School . She worked as a teller for First Seneca Bank for 32 years.

Ms. Shoup enjoyed playing bridge for over 60 years. She enjoyed spending time playing cards with family and friends. Ms. Shoup loved to walk with her dog around Clarion.

Ms. Shoup is survived by one daughter, Laura L. Eisenman of Clarion; one sister, Mary Elisabeth Walters Leasure of Rochester, N.Y., two grandchildren, Jeff Royer and his wife, Becky, of Brookville and Belinda Royer of Boca Raton, Fla. and five great- grandchildren, Jeffery Michael Wiant of Clarion, Allison Powell of Boca Raton, Fla., Jennifer Royer of Knox, Maddison Royer of Brookville and Isabella Royer of Brookville.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Shoup was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis Walters, Pat Walters, and John Walters, Jr. and one son-in-law, Gene Eisenman.

There will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clarion-Forest Visiting Nurses Association Hospice House, Shippenville.

Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street , Clarion is in charge of arrangements.

PARKER – Lawrence W. “Brownie” Brown, 62, of Parker, died suddenly Friday afternoon at his residence of natural causes.

PARKER – Frederick J. Germain, 83, of Parker, died Friday afternoon, May 16, 2008 , at Parker Personal Care Center.

Daniel J. Leach

PARKER – Daniel J. Leach, 24, of North Ash Avenue , Parker, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, May 14, 2008 , at his residence.

Clarence W. Snow

HILLIARDS – Clarence W. Snow, 55, of Hilliards, Butler County , died suddenly Saturday evening, May 17, 2008 , at his residence. Surviving are one sister and six brothers, one of whom is James “Jim” Snow of Emlenton.
