Foxburg renews police contract
By Rodney L. Sherman, Clarion News Editor

FOXBURG - Foxburg Borough Council July 7 re-authorized an ordinance contracting for law enforcement service with the Emlenton police department.

Foxburg council OK’ed a contract which pays Emlenton Borough $25 per hour for police services and $30 per month as a fuel surcharge.

The police department will patrol Foxburg on an as-needed basis determined largely by the police officers. The hourly rate also applies to time spent by officers at court proceedings.

While the contract does not include a minimum or maximum amount of time the Emlenton officers will spend in Foxburg, borough secretary Gwen Atwood estimated the monthly total of services would be in the 10 to 15 hours per month range.

Emlenton police previously provided law enforcement services for Foxburg, however, the contract needed to be re-authorized to continue the agreement.

“The police protection provided by the Emlenton officers is fantastic,” said council president Lou Kalinowsky.

“I think we get a lot of patrols for our money,” added council member Ed Lowry.

The Emlenton police officers are permitted to enforce state crimes codes, local ordinances and periodic security checks of businesses, establishments or locations.

Under the agreement, the Emlenton Police Department supplies all needed equipment and the township will not be responsible for any salary or related costs.

Emlenton remains liable for the police officers actions while they are duty in the township.

In other business, Foxburg Borough Council recently approved the transfer of a state liquor license from a Farmington Township business to a proposed Foxburg Borough business.

The transferred liquor license will be used at a pizza restaurant within the borough.

The approval of that transfer came at a specially scheduled June 24 meeting of council.
