General News Clarion Area plans to extend Trinity exemption
CLARION - In addition to the number of abatement years, the school
also will extend the amount of acreage included in the property. The park is considered a Keystone Opportunity Expansion
Zone as well as a Keystone Innovation Zone. When a park is labeled a KOEZ and a
KIZ the park has tax exemption status for a period of time as well as equipment
purchasing power. The park’s tax exemption status was supposed to expire by
2015 but with recent difficulties in acquiring tenants for the land the school
is expected to extend the deadline to 2025. School board members speculated the difficulty in finding
tenants was related to the proposed Interstate 80 tolling, which was recently
shut down by the Federal Highway Administration. Clarion Area Superintendent George White said the school
district would still receive transfer taxes and when tenants do move to the
property the school district can expect new families to relocate to the area
bringing additional property tax revenue. “Without these incentives the land’s just out there and
we’re mowing it,” White said. School board member Ron Perry questioned if developers were
trying to obtain technology based businesses for the property. “There was a focus on technology,” Funk said. Funk added he knows the Trinity Point developers are
marketing to a wide variety of tenants. Funk explained there was an expectation
