Scared to death
By Ralph Bowersox, Clarion

One summer my wife, Norma and I took our 8-year-old grandson, Mike, to Cook Forest .

He wanted to ride an inner tube down the Clarion River . We took him up the river in the car and then left him get in the river. We drove slowly down the river, trying to keep an eye on him.

In some places trees obstructed the view. We lost sight of him! We were getting worried. We thought we may have passed him so we turned around and went back up the road. We still didn’t see him so we drove down to the bridge and there he was, sitting on a rock. He said, “Hey, where have you guys been?”

Then Mike wanted to climb up the fire tower so I went up with him. It was pretty shaky up at the top so after a short time I said, “OK, let’s go down.” He looked down and his face turned pale and his knuckles turned white from gripping the handrail. He said he was afraid to go down.

When he looked down at the ground it scared him. He declared, “I’m going to stay up here. I’m never going down!” I pleaded with him and said, “You can’t stay up here the rest of your life!”

It started to get dark. After a long time, I got an idea! I said, “Put my glasses on and things won’t look so bad. Make sure you look through the bifocals.” He put them on and said, “I can’t see the ground.” They made him about as blind as a bat. I took him by the hand and led him down.

P.S. No more fire towers!
