Monthly payments
By Ralph Bowersox, Clarion

I went to work at the Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company (CPT) in Franklin in January 1951. They told me that I would have to be employed ten months before the insurance would cover pregnancy.

Our son, Jack, was born Oct. 29, just three days before insurance would kick in. I asked Dr. Ketner if he would change the date on the birth certificate to Nov. 1. He said he would if the hospital would change theirs. They refused, so he said I could pay him in monthly payments.

I paid $5 or $10 a month. Right after I finally got him, about four years later, he said Jack needed his tonsils removed! Fortunately, the insurance took care of that.

Not long after that, my oldest daughter, Karen, who was about 7 years old, had her tonsils removed. I came into the house the day after she came home from the hospital and asked Norma, my wife, “How is Karen?” She said, “Go look.” She was in the living room watching T.V. and eating potato chips!

When my daughter, Jeanne (Lee) was 17 years old, she was having a sore throat most of the time and tonsillitis. She drove herself to the hospital and demanded to have her tonsils taken out!

When I went to see her the next day, she said the only thing that she could eat was popsicles. I went to Herman’s store and bought a whole box full. The next day when I went to see her, she said she needed more popsicles. She complained, “The nurses ate them all!”

P.S. When you have your tonsils removed it is called a tonsillectomy. When you have your appendix removed it is called an appendectomy. When you have something removed from your head, it is called a haircut.
