May is Mental Health Awareness month
By Jane Minich,Clarion County Mental Health Student Assistance Program liaison

May is National Mental Health Awareness month and it is a good time to be reminded that it is just as important to take care of our mental health as it is our physical health.

Mental health is defined as how a person thinks, feels and acts when faced with life’s situations. This includes handling stress, relating to other people and making decisions.

The World Health organization also stresses that mental health is a “state of well-being in which individual realizes his or her abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

People who are emotionally healthy are in control of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. As noted in an article by Familydoctor.org, they feel good about themselves and have good relationships.

They can keep problems in perspective. To maintain emotional health, it is important to learn ways to cope with stress and problems.

Taking care of your physical health will help you stay mentally well. Take care of your body and mind by exercising regularly, eating healthy meals and getting enough sleep.

Notice your emotions and reactions and try to understand them. Learning how to sort out the causes of sadness, frustration and anger in your life can help you better manage your emotional health.

Learn to express your feelings. Don’t keep sadness or anger inside. Think before you act. This helps you avoid saying or doing something you might regret. Make time for things you enjoy.

Focus on positive things in your life. You are in control of your thoughts, actions and words. Don’t allow yourself to think or speak negatively. Avoid aggression and choose healthier thoughts.

If problems occur in you past, try to put them behind you or let them go. Acceptance or forgiveness can be very healing.

Keep your good memories with you: anything else is just junk. Adjust your perspective. Focus on today and look forward to each tomorrow. We never know what joys may lay ahead!

There are many resources to learn more about positive thinking and maintaining your mental health, including self help books, magazine articles, counselors and the internet.
