Walters strikes out 13 in Clarion win
By Ryan S. Pugh, Clarion News Sports Editor

CRANBERRY - Clarion High softball starting pitcher Alicia Walters finished her game against Cranberry April 30 the same way she started it, by striking out the side.

In between, Walters and the Bobcats topped the Berries 6-4 in a KSAC match-up.

Walters tossed a complete game, gave up two earned runs on three hits, struck out 13 and issued no walks.

“When (Walters) throws strikes like that it makes us not back on our heels as much,” said Clarion coach Dan Shofestall. “She was moving the ball around well and getting ahead in the count. That is all about pitching.

“She did a really good job.”

“(Walters) had a big curveball,” said Cranberry coach Dave Guth. “This was the first time we saw her this year, and with that big curveball, she was able to hit the outside corner.”

Walters also helped her own cause at the plate going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Bobcats notched the first run of the contest when freshman catcher Kelly Peterson ripped a double down the left field line, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Abby Heller.

Kelly Peterson was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

In the top of the fourth frame, the Bobcats added a second run when Cierra Arnett led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on an error and was driven home by a Lauren Everett single.

Cranberry climbed back into the contest in the bottom of the inning when Kayla Amsler led off the frame with a single and advanced home two batters later when Kirstin Nedich ripped a single down the left field line. Sheila Sheatz followed with a double that scored Nedich to tie the score at 2-2.

Sheatz had two RBI in the contest and was the only Berries batter to register an extra-base hit off Walters.

Clarion re-took the lead in the top of the fifth when Tiffany Smathers hit a one-out single, stole second and scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to make the score 3-2.

Smathers was 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

The Bobcats extended their lead in the top of the next inning when Walters laced a double down the left field line that brought home Kelly Peterson and Kelly Stroup to make the lead 5-2

However, the Berries closed to within one run in the bottom of the frame when Amsler and Kristin White scored on a sacrifice and a wild pitch. But that would be as close as Cranberry would get as Clarion added a run in the top of the seventh when Kelly Peterson ripped a double down the left field line to bring home Smathers.

“They work hard,” said Shofestall. “They know when they come to practice every night, they have to work hard.

“I think we’re coming together.”
