 05/09/2008 - Lottery returned $2.2 million to county seniors in 2006-07

CLARION - As the Clarion County Area Agency on Aging scrambles to prepare a budget for fiscal year 2008/09 without being forced to cut vital services because of budgetary shortfalls, state Rep. Fred McIlhattan (R-63) recently released a statement saying that nearly $8.4 million from lottery proceeds had gone toward services for seniors in Clarion and Armstrong counties.

To promote safe teen driving practices and increase  community traffic safety, Keystone High School participated in the New Traffic Safety Initiative at Indiana University of Pennsylvania which had Keystone competing through activities such as seat belt efforts, a presentation by Knox Borough police officers and driving in general. The goal was to win the opportunity to receive free use of the Pennsylvania DUI Association’s DUI Simulator. The school in the county with the highest points received this opportunity and Keystone won the use of the DUI simulator on Tuesday, May 6. Daniel Sogor, safety bug coordinator, explained the different ways to simulate road conditions such as rain storms, black ice, a flat tire as well as delayed response that occurs when driving under the influence. MIOLA - Highland Township supervisors are waiting for the Department of Environmental Protection to decide whether a strip mine has been properly completed or if the mine operator has some bad water to clean up first.

CLARION - “We have received no public comments during the 30-day comment period,” engineer Marty English told the Knox Borough council members at their May 5 meeting. English then passed around a resolution for the board’s approval for the final application to the Department of Environmental Protection for the Act 537 joint sewer project with Knox Borough and Beaver Township .

The comedy centers on a man who believes he is dying and attempts to set his wife up with a second husband while she believes he is covering up for an affair. Larry McGinnis of Clarion attempts the standing long jump at the 2008 Clarion County Special Olympics held on May 1 at Clarion University ’s Memorial Stadium. Around 140 athletes from A-C Valley, Clarion Area, Clarion-Limestone, Keystone, Mahoning Elementary, Union, and adult and youth participants from around the area took part in running events, the standing long jump, and the softball throw. Athletes train for at least eight weeks in preparation for the competition. Special Olympics Pennsylvania provides year-round training and competition in 23 Olympic-style sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. For more information on becoming a volunteer for the Special Olympics, contact volunteer coordinator Denise Rhoads at 229-1197.
